What you will learn

6 – 9. August 2016, with Pirkko Mäkelä-Haapalinna, PSA

Techniques and previous experience

The workshop is for you who want to learn regardless of your present level. You will learn a lot if you take part in all activities.

The workshop is designed for artists who paint in soft pastels, or oils. What you learn in one of these techniques can nearly always be used with the other. You will be given a list of supplies to bring.

 The 4-day workshop

The purpose of the workshop is to train particularly pastel painters to use colour harmonies and the possibilities of using a limited palette. Oil and acrylic painters can of course take advantage of the course offerings.

We try to learn a simplified treatment of the subject using values, through a few exercises and demonstrations.

We’ll look at a variety of  underpainting techniques: using gesso and other primers, as well as the impact of different types of paper. The aim is to help students find their own expression, marks and textures.

One day we will paint the impression of the landscape in a small nearby fishing harbour or other similar place.

The last two days we paint larger works, subject given by the teacher.

Your own photographs can be used as references. However, a direct reproduction of the photograph is not the aim, but it will be used for composing, finding values, and so on.

The emphasis is on having an open mind and most of all having fun.
